Rheinberger - The Star of Bethleham

We are a large, non-auditioned choir that has performed a wide and varied repertoire from Mozart to Tavener for over 130 years.  We aspire to a high musical standard and aim to thrill our concert audiences.  Joined by professional musicians such as the region's leading orchestra Southern Sinfonia and London Ulysses Orchestra, we perform three concerts a year in the Newbury area.  Our regular venues are St Nicolas Church, Newbury and the beautiful Abbey Church at Douai Abbey, Woolhampton. We hope you enjoy browsing our website and look forward to welcoming you at our rehearsals or at our next concert.

Our 2018 - 2019 season of concerts

Our season leapt into life with a spirited performance of Handelʼs Samson, performed in St Nicolas Church with the assistance of five soloists and the London Ulysses Orchestra. Samson is one of Handelʼs most enduringly popular works, full of dramatic choruses, rich characters and special Handelian effects, and it proved most enjoyable to sing. For the spring term, we took a step forward in time to the classical period with Haydnʼs The Seasons. This work, probably at least the equal of his better-known Creation, was a major undertaking, presenting different but equally interesting challenges. As befits the depiction of nature, it is full of light and shade, joy and foreboding, tranquillity and turbulence as humans and nature interact. The work is divided, as one might expect, into four sections, each dealing with the activities and occupations of a particular season. The concert was a huge success and enjoyed by a large audience in the church. To view Derek Ansell's review in the Newbury Weekly News click here.

Our summer concert saw us return to Douai Abbey with a programme of devotional music including Lauridsen - Lux Arterna, Vahghan Williams - Three Shakespeare Songs and popular works by Britten, Rutter, and other composers. We included some of the music we intend to sing in October, when the choir looks forward to a joint venture with choirs in Trondheim, Norway. In December we are back in St Nicolas Church to perform a new work to the choir Rheinberger: The Star of Bethlehem, Finzi: In terra pax and an orchestral work which is still to be announced.
