Newbury Choral Society has been performing major works in the Newbury area for over 130 years. This section of our website allows access to all the performance data since the Society started in 1884 and first performed in 1885.
This data has been provided by Godfrey Abbot, who sang tenor with the society for over 40 year and sadly passed away in 2018. Godfrey collated the data through extensive research of archive material from many sources and Newbury Choral Society will always be very grateful to him.
The more recent data records the names of the orchestras, soloists and other relevant information. We hope that these names will be the musical stars of the future!
In 2019 this data was augmented by Matthew Evans using the societies physical programme and NWN review archive. This includes links to scans of the programmes and reviews and searchable lists of the societies officers (committee) and performance soloists. There are now over a hundred programmes and reviews with the earliest programme dating from 1905. Take a look as they are a facinating insight into music and singing in those times. To view the committee information select the 'Committee History' menu option from the 'NCS History' section. The Programmes and Reviews can be found on both the 'Performance History' and dedicated 'Programme and Review' menu options.
To search the site you can select searches by Date, Work, Composer, Conductor, Chairperson, Secretary, Treasurer etc. using the menu on the top. Alternatively use the 'Free Form Search' option to perform custom searches.
