We are a large, non-auditioned choir that has performed a wide and varied repertoire from Mozart to Tavener for over 130 years.  We aspire to a high musical standard and aim to thrill our concert audiences.  Joined by professional musicians such as the renowned chamber orchestra London Concertante and the region's leading orchestra Southern Sinfonia, we perform three concerts a year in the Newbury area.  Our regular venues are St Nicolas Church, Newbury and the beautiful Abbey Church at Douai Abbey, Woolhampton. We hope you enjoy browsing our website and look forward to welcoming you at our rehearsals or at our next concert .

Our 2017 - 2018 season of concerts

The 2016 - 2017 season was very busy performing Mahler’s Symphony No.2 (‘Resurrection’) at Southwark Cathedral, The Armed Man: A Mass For Peace by Karl Jenkins and Mendelssohn’s great oratorio Elijah. The last concert of the season was on Saturday 1st July 2017 with English composer Will Todd's choral jazz piece, Mass in Blue. With Will Todd himself accompanying us at the piano, along with his drummer and bass player who make up the Will Todd Trio. Also playing was saxophonist Paul Fawkus, with Hilary Cronin singing the soprano solo. With this stunning line up and with Cathal conducting what a rousing performance it proved to be for both the audience and choir. The second half of the concert continued the jazz theme with a celebration of songs from The Great American Songbook. Derek Ansell’s review in the Newbury Weekly News can be viewed by clicking here.

The 2017 - 2018 season started with a collaboration with The Newbury & District Cancer Care Trust and Macmillan Cancer Support, performing a varied range of Christmas music from composers including Tavener, Rutter, Lauridsen and Vaughan Williams, including Today the Virgin, Jesus Child, O Magnum Mysterium and Fantasia on Christmas Carols.

In April 2018 we will perform Messa da Requiem by Guiseppe Verdi. This enormous work requires a huge orchestra and double choir, so will join forces with Billingshurst Choral Society and in a departure the venue will be Basingstoke’s The Anvil. This is very exciting as we have been trying to organise this work for a number of years.

Our summer season will see us return to Douai Abbey in June 2018. The programme will be announced shortly.
