We are a large, non-auditioned choir that has performed a wide and varied repertoire from Mozart to Tavener for over 130 years.  We aspire to a high musical standard and aim to thrill our concert audiences.  Joined by professional musicians such as the renowned chamber orchestra London Concertante and the region's leading orchestra Southern Sinfonia, we perform three concerts a year in the Newbury area.  Our regular venues are St Nicolas Church, Newbury and the beautiful Abbey Church at Douai Abbey, Woolhampton. We hope you enjoy browsing our website and look forward to welcoming you at our rehearsals or at our next concert .

Our 2015 - 2016 season of concerts

This season we have had the privilege to sing music written by such composers as Handel, Brahms, Haydn, Pergolesi and Vivaldi. We have had the pleasure of working with great soloists and orchestras: our old friends the Covent Garden Chamber Orchestra, and our region’s foremost chamber orchestra, Southern Sinfonia. We performed in such diverse venues as our parish church, Douai Abbey in Woolhampton and the ‘Musician’s Church’ in London. Our latest concert, Sacred Italian Baroque at Douai in June, was a hugely enjoyable experience for performers and audience. You can read the Newbury Weekly News review of this concert by clicking here.

Next season is equally exciting, as we look forward to two concerts in the autumn term. We have been invited to sing in a performance of Mahler’s Symphony No.2 (‘Resurrection’) at Southwark Cathedral in November, and our Newbury concert in the same month will feature the contemporary work of anti-war sentiment, The Armed Man: A Mass For Peace by Karl Jenkins. In March 2017 we will present Mendelssohn’s great oratorio Elijah, first performed by this choir in 1889, four years after its formation.

Rehearsals for the new term begin on Monday 5 September 2016. We have spaces for sopranos and we are crying out for tenors and basses! We work hard while having fun and learning all the time. We hope to welcome you at rehearsals or in the audience for our next season of concerts.
