Haydn Harmoniemesse

Saturday 27th March 2010
St Nicolas, Newbury

We are a large, non-auditioned choir that has performed a wide and varied repertoire from Mozart to Tavener for over 120 years.  We aspire to a high musical standard and aim to thrill our concert audiences.  Joined by professional musicians such as the renowned chamber orchestra London Concertante and the region's leading orchestra Southern Sinfonia, we perform three concerts a year in the Newbury area.  Our regular venues are St Nicolas Church, Newbury and the beautiful Abbey Church at Douai Abbey, Woolhampton. We hope you enjoy browsing our website and look forward to welcoming you at our rehearsals or at our next concert .

Our 2009 – 2010 season of concerts

This season Newbury Choral Society proudly celebrates 125 years of making music. Since the first concert in 1885 in which Mr J.S. Liddle conducted a varied programme to a capacity audience in the town hall, we have continued to bring to the area a wide-ranging repertoire of choral music to inspire singers and audiences alike.

We began the celebrations in December with two performances of Handel's Messiah, conducted by our new Musical Director Cathal Garvey. Newbury Weekly News reviewer Derek Ansell described Cathal's interpretation of this much-loved work as 'noticeable for a highly satisfying musical unity'. The combined elements of the choir, players of the Southern Sinfonia and the four excellent soloists made for 'a splendid and thoroughly enjoyable ensemble performance'.

In keeping with our reputation for innovative programming, the rest of this season's concerts are just as enticing. In March we present a Haydn double bill. Both works were composed during his most prolific period as the 18th century came to a close: the ceremonial Te Deum, written for the Empress Maria Theresa of Austria, and the Harmoniemesse, composed for the Esterházy family and Haydn's last work before he was overtaken by illness. In June, audiences can look forward to Duruflé's Requiem and Britten's Hymn to St Cecilia at Douai Abbey.

Please visit the Concerts and Events page for more details and be sure to get the dates in your diaries.
