Newbury Choral Society's 2007 – 2008 season promises to
bring a year of great music to our audiences. Building
on our recent innovative programming, our December
concert featured performances of two twentieth century
works: the female section of the choir sang Britten's
A Ceremony of Carols, while the men performed
Duruflé's Messe cum Jubilo. We know that our
audiences love to sing at Christmas too so there were
carols for congregation and choir.
Our
April 2008 concert featured a work that is, in the words
of our Principal Conductor, Leo Hussain, the 'high point
of European artistic achievement up to 1750'. Bach's
St. Matthew Passion was sung in German and played on
baroque instruments so that our audience could
experience this supremely powerful music as Bach himself
conceived it.
Our
third concert of the season at Douai Abbey in June 2008
will mark the 50th anniversary of the death
of one of England's best-loved composers, Vaughan
Williams. We will be performing a varied programme of
some of his most beautiful choral and orchestral works,
including Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis, Five
Mystical Songs and Fantasia on Greensleeves.
We
hope that you will be inspired to join us for this
series of exciting musical events. |
