Queen's Jubilee Concert

Vaughan Williams - A Sea Symphony
and British celebratory music

Saturday 23rd June 2012
Luker Hub, St Bartholomew's School, Newbury

We are a large, non-auditioned choir that has performed a wide and varied repertoire from Mozart to Tavener for over 120 years.  We aspire to a high musical standard and aim to thrill our concert audiences.  Joined by professional musicians such as the renowned chamber orchestra London Concertante and the region's leading orchestra Southern Sinfonia, we perform three concerts a year in the Newbury area.  Our regular venues are St Nicolas Church, Newbury and the beautiful Abbey Church at Douai Abbey, Woolhampton. We hope you enjoy browsing our website and look forward to welcoming you at our rehearsals or at our next concert .

Our 2011 – 2012 season of concerts

Our spring concert took the form of a Come and Sing! Greatest Choral Hits event.  This was a new venture for our Society in which we invited singers to join us for a day of rehearsals and a concert in the evening at St Nicolas Church, Newbury.  We were overwhelmed by the level of interest!  Our ranks were more than doubled by participants not only from Newbury and surroundings but as far afield as Bournemouth and Shrewsbury.

There was a real sense of excitement from the time singers started to arrive in the morning until the closing bars of Handel's Hallelujah chorus in the evening.  Musical Director Cathal Garvey led the proceedings with his characteristic enthusiasm, eye for detail and sense  of humour.  The audience was treated to a 250-strong choir performing favourite numbers from classic choral works. Carolyn Greenwood's review in the 29 March 2012 edition of the Newbury Weekly News captures the sense of enjoyment and commitment felt by everyone.  You can read this version by clicking here.  We were also delighted to receive a more detailed piece, written especially for this website, which you can read  here.  Guest singers have commented that the day was 'highly professional, well organised and musically stimulating'; that the concert was 'electrifying'; and it is clear that our guests felt very welcome.  To read the feedback in full please click here.

The event was an ideal taster session for prospective members as we are once again recruiting new singers in each voice part.  Please see the 'Join NCS' section of the website.

For our next concert, we are teaming up with Newbury Town Council, Southern Sinfonia and other local musical groups to celebrate the Queen's Diamond Jubilee.  We present a very special programme starting with the ultimate British work, Vaughan Williams' A Sea Symphony.  The second half of this patriotic line-up consists of the best of British celebratory music – for more details click on the concert link in the box.

We look forward to seeing you in June!
